More Than a Label: Why Pawraana is Rooted in Rescue

More Than a Label: Why Pawraana is Rooted in Rescue

The heart of Pawraana isn't just in the fabric—it’s in the paws.

As I prepare to launch Pawraana, many people ask me why I’ve committed 10% of every sale to street dog shelters in India. To answer that, I have to take you back nearly 20 years to the streets of Delhi.

A Journey That Started with Kaiser

In 2006, I rescued my first Indian "Indie" dog, Kaiser, from the streets of Delhi. He changed my life and opened my eyes to the resilience, intelligence, and often the suffering of India’s street dogs. When Kaiser eventually passed, I knew his legacy had to live on. Today, at the Kannan Animal Welfare (KAW) sanctuary in Sohna, a medical cabin stands in his memory—a place of healing for dogs who have nowhere else to go.

A 12-Year Partnership

My relationship with KAW isn't just a business partnership; it’s a deep-rooted friendship. I have known Vandana Anchalia, the founder of KAW, for over 10 years. I watched her early in her journey in animal welfare, driven by a tenacity and dedication to the "voiceless" that I have rarely seen elsewhere.

Over the years, our bond has only grown. In 2017, my second Indian rescue, Molly, flew from KAW to join me in the UK. Even when I am miles away, I remain a "virtual parent" to Mishti, a long-term resident at the shelter. I visit the Sohna rescue centre at least once a year to see the work firsthand and stay in constant contact with Vandana to see how we can do more.

Why KAW?

I chose KAW as our primary partner because they don't just "shelter" dogs; they transform lives. Based in Noida/Sohna, KAW is a non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick and injured street dogs.

Their work focuses on three critical pillars:

  1. Critical Care: Taking in dogs with severe injuries or terminal illnesses that other shelters might turn away.

  2. Adoptions: Finding forever homes for "Indies"—both locally and internationally (like my Molly!).

  3. Sterilisation (The Long-term Vision): Vandana and I are in total agreement that the only way to end the cycle of hunger, cruelty, and overpopulation is through massive, consistent sterilisation programs. By reducing the number of dogs born onto the streets, we reduce the number of dogs who have to suffer.

Why Pawraana Was Born

I reached a point where I wanted to do more for KAW and other verified partners than my own pocket would allow. I wanted to create a sustainable way to funnel resources back to these heroes in India.

Every time you wear a piece of Pawraana—whether it’s our recycled cotton pyjamas or our hand-printed accessories—you are directly contributing to a medical treatment, a meal, or a sterilisation surgery.

You aren't just buying handmade Indian craft; you are helping us advocate for the dogs who have spent too long being invisible.

Thank you for being part of this journey. We hope you love our collection as much as we do, and the mission it supports.
